Claudio Branch
I've been using a set of Dosch HDRI's for the past few years and they are starting to show their age (glaring seams and lens dirt). Can anyone recommend a source for building a hi-res and high-quality library? Thanks.
Brodie Geers
Which dosch hdri's do you have? I got the 360 Backgrounds pack a couple years ago and ran into those issues. I finally emailed Dosch about all the issues and he agreed with my analysis and ended up taking the whole pack down. I then got a different pack, I think it's called Skies V2 or something and the quality is much much better. I suspect they had some issues in those older hdri's which have sense been resolved. -Brodie
Brodie Geers
Btw, these are really great too. I've got a couple freebies from 3d world and they're excellent. http://www.bobgroothuis.com/blog/2009/06/order_page/ -Brodie
Claudio Branch
Which dosch hdri's do you have? I got the 360 Backgrounds pack a couple years ago and ran into those issues. This is probably the one I have as well. They're not horrible, but you will run into bad spots when using them for animations. I did take a look at Hyperfocal. Kinda pricey, but it sounds like the quality is high. Anyone here using those?
jackb602
I'll second Brodie's suggestion for the Dutch Skies HDRI collection. Just bought a few of the skies for a recent project and they made a huge difference. Very high res and a wide range of scenes. Jack
Dave Buckley
You could try, Peter Guthrie's collection over at 3D Ocean. Or HDRI locations have some really nice high-res sets (expensive though) And I've recently been looking at Moofe although can't vouch for quality
Claudio Branch
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. As this point, I think I am going Dutch!
Tommy L
Is it possible to create your own HDRI's in Max? I used to make them in the studio (silver ball technique) for capturing studio lighting rigs. Once they'd finished a shoot I'd have the photographer do the shots and I'd put them together. So is it possible to set up lights in Max in an interior and then render panoramics to either be compiled in post or retain the HDR information? Claudio Branch
I am really glad I went with the Bob Groothuis HDRI's. Their quality is superb. I ran a few tests with one of them and here is a scene rendered out of V-Ray. The only lighting in the scene is the HDRI in the Environment Slot. Claudio Branch
peter guthrie ones are best by a mile I saw his and they are really nice too. His are also quite a bit more expensive. I might be able to invest in a few of his after I take care of some other software fires...
