Devin Johnston
I've just upgraded my machine with Windows 7 it's a fresh install of everything, I'm running an Nvidia Quadro 3800 & Quadro 6000 but my video is being generated by the 3800. I'm experiencing a pretty significant lag with almost every operation I try from selecting an object to navigating through menus. It only seems to be the GUI rendering speeds seem to be good, I've got all the latest service packs & hot fixes installed and I'm running with Direct X 9 video drivers. I haven't installed the Max performance drivers yet, I don't know if it will make that much of a difference. Has anyone experienced this, do you know why it's acting this way? I came from Windows XP 64 and Max 2011 and had no issues so my guess is Windows is sucking up a lot of my video cards power. I'm also running a dual monitor setup. AJLynn
Do you have the latest Quadro driver on there?
Devin Johnston
I'm running version 8.17.12.5929 released on 8/5/2010 but it's not the max performance driver so maybe I'll give that a shot.
Bruce Hart
Do you have the Windows 7 Aero stuff going - frosted glass windows and drop shadows? I turned all that stuff off and used the Windows "classic" mode. I found it does not look as good but can improve performance, especially on a dual monitor setup. Devin Johnston
Yea I do have the Aero stuff on I'll try turning it off and see if that helps.
Devin Johnston
Ok I've turned off all the extras in Windows and set it to maximize performance, I've also installed the latest Max performance drivers and although it's a little better Max is easily 2-3 times slower in it's interactivity than it was before. theqball
a 265.75 or later driver should be better, there's a workaround Nvidia did for a Win7 problem with DX. 266.35 is the latest quadro driver posted to nvidia's website. http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-win7-winvista-32bit-266.35-whql-driver.html also the NVIDIA 3ds Max Performance Driver should significantly help on many machines. http://www.nvidia.com/object/maxtreme_workstation.html
Devin Johnston
I just made a discovery, I switched my display drivers from Direct 3d to Open GL and the speed difference is tremendous. Is this happening because Open GL uses hardware acceleration and Direct 3D doesn't?
theqball
both are graphics hardware accelerated, just different types. Some features will not work when in OGL mode. If you are seeing a big improvement in OGL then it's likely you have a driver issue.
Devin Johnston
I'm using the newest Nvidia drivers which ironically don't seem to work as well as the old ones.
John Pruden
I'm also wondering if maybe your system needs a beefier power supply? The newer video cards require a lot more power than those from a couple years ago, and if they aren't sufficiently powered their performance will suffer. But why OpenGL would be so much faster than Direct3d, I'm not sure. My experience has always shown OpenGL to be faster with wireframe views, and WAY slower with shaded, while Direct3D was very fast with shaded views and slower in wirerframe. Devin Johnston
Is there a way to determine if the power supply needs upgrading? It's very odd the Quadro 6000 is at least 2-3 times faster than the quadro 3800 and yet my performance is worse. I think I'm going to contact Nvidia and see what they have to say.
