modelling wooden siding

hi. I am using max 11

Ok, I noticed nobody uses displace for wooden planks. (I made some quick tests and I also wasnt satisfied with rendering time/results)

So how to model it easily?

The question is obvious when the wall is straight and not already divided in any way.

But what to do if I have a:

1 different shape like some sort of quadrangle? (in my case I have a roof that is a quadrangle and isnt aligned in any of X,Y,Z axes... so even adjusting slice plane is really annoyiong)

2 surface with holes? (but I bet I just have to make the holes later)

Any help would be appreciated,

I can even buy a plugin or sth if you know any.

Of course if you know any tips how to use displacement in such case properly it would be good too (even easier)

for repeatitive straight line patterns, such as siding I would use a spline that is spaced evenly with a sweep modifier (referencing a spline section for the angle of the siding) or if it is a simple rectangular section just use the rendered spline option instead.

If you need to make holes for windows then you can just divide the specific sections of the splines which cover the window openings into the three parts and delete the new middle line which is created and reposition the vertexes so they line up with either side of the window.

Sounds a bit like nonsence but if you try it you will see what I mean.

By the way, using this method you can set up your generate UV maps and real world mapping as well so you can get nice easy texture mapping of your wood.
