The high res model is prefractured with "deconstructor" by Marc Lorenz then passed on to particle flow's BirthGroup and triggered with a deflector. The particles drift away and ease into their final shape, rotation and position. Every fragment maintains it's original Mental Ray or VRay shader. And yes James, I also imagined I had to be a bespectacled boffin with mountains of code to create this, but it looks like someone may have taken care of the uber-technical end already.
