rabit1
Hi guys, I keep getting not enough memory (Rendering is canceled) error from mental ray. This error however doesn't crash 3dsmax. Clicking Ok just returns me back to Max. The scene I'm working is not that big I think. I was just trying to render and exterior scene, about 16 medium-high detailed buildings.. Lots of windows and some very simple interiors inside, with no trees and textures yet using mentalray Sky and Daylight system. All buildings are already set as mr proxy objects. I set FG to draft and no GI. aliasing on low setting 1/16-1, I even tried to render with just a simple material overide, plain white. Set mr to BSP2. and also lower trace depth settings. Looking at task manager the error came up when memory usage reached almost 3Gb.. which is weird because I'm using XP64 with Max2010 64bit and 4Gb RAM. My question is, what sort of things should we look for with this kind of problem? If I keep getting this error, then how should one approach on rendering an even more complex scene? It is very discouraging because I haven't even put enough objects on this scene such as trees, cars and textures... Is this normal? I haven't tried vray yet, because we don't have vray. Thanks in advance, Regards RR
jinsley
What is the size of your render? Are you using excessively large maps? Post some screen shots of your settings... FG, etc...
absolute3d
4gb is even a low amount of ram for renderings. You need an upgrade

JayTee
Here some quick advices that may help you with memory problems. Some of these are for v-ray, but mosta are for 3ds max or general tips: http://3d-visualisointi.blogspot.com/2011/01/vray-memory-error-problem-rendering-big.html
rabit1
What is the size of your render? Are you using excessively large maps? Post some screen shots of your settings... FG, etc... Thanks for the reply jinsley, I'm not at the office right now so I can't give u any screenshot, but as I said earlier, I haven't even got to assigning textures yet, they are still simple A&D white matte materials. No textures. Just buildings with Daylight system. NO G.I. FG set to Draft... Everything else set to Low settings (shadow, reflection) Aliasing also low: 1/16-
rabit1
4gb is even a low amount of ram for renderings. You need an upgrade Yeah u're right... Can't get enough of those... But the weird thing is that checking on memory usage (task manager), the error came up when memory usage still below 3Gb.. So I figure mentalray should not be complaining about not enough memory thanks...
Albert Debnam
Do you have dual core or quad? My laptop has 4Gb of ram w/ quad core 64bit and it has yet to run out of memory on a render. It may not be the fastest in town but it does render. However, I do have problems with VRay (extremely high render times for even simple scenes). I would be curious to see your settings also. This doesn't sound like a simple RAM issue.
