Architecture and the 3D web

Is there a desire by architects to put 3D architecture models on the web in 3D for users to navigate through. Is this something that is currently being done? Currently architects use software tools to render a 2D photorealistic image of a 3D architecture model from different viewpoints, and also create walkthrough 3D animation videos. Is there any need by the architecture community to put 3D models online, if so, what would it be used for?

Here is an example of architecture 3D models in a webpage using 3D web standards.

After the above page loads, you should see an animated X3D logo, then just click on one of the images on the left hand side to load the 3D model into the webpage. You left click and drag your mouse to navigate through the 3D architecture model in your webpage. Other navigation options are available using the buttons at the bottom left of the 3D viewer.

The above example uses X3D file format for viewing 3D in a web page. You can convert from 3ds max file format to X3D uses a converter tool or an Export to X3D plugin for 3ds max.

The above example also uses Java technology to view 3D in a webpage. Most desktop computers have a java runtime already installed. You can check which version of the java runtime you have on your computer at this site.

The demo works best with the latest version of the Java Runtime from Sun / Oracle.
