alfa smyrna
I have a bitmap applied as a spherical background. I want to be able to unwrap this background and render and paint over it in Photoshop. ( I don't know if "unwrap" is the correct terminology but I want to unfold this map applied to the spherical environment and render it ) How can I make this- anyone can show me a way? Stephen Thomas
Isn't the bitmap already unwrapped? It's only spherical in the scene, but the bitmap is flat surely.
alfa smyrna
Yes but it is is sperically applied and with U and V tiling.
BrianKitts
doesn't matter, just open the source bitmap in photoshop and paint away.
Crazy Homeless Guy
More than likely what has already been stated will work. .......but if you truly need to unwrap the background for whatever reason I would recommend making a sphere that encloses the entire scene, applying a UVW Unwrap modifier to it, and then hitting edit and rendering a template which can be brought into Photoshop and painted on top of. alfa smyrna
doesn't matter, just open the source bitmap in photoshop and paint away. I can't open the source bitmap as it is applied to the background. It is a spercial environment mapping, so image is distorted in a spherical way. I would like to render it in an unfolded way so I can paint on it.

Thanks for the tip. There was also another tip at the CGNetworks- let me write here if anyone is interested. To set up 6 cameras and render them in cross and then composite them with a HDRI editor. Stephen Thomas
So are you saying you have altered the tiling etc. in max and want to re-export the altered bitmap? You could use the panorama exporter, it's under utilities in the command panel. I think you're overcomplicating things, but it's hard to say without knowing/seeing what it is you're actually trying to do.
Stephen Thomas
Or is it that you have altered the tiling to get something you like in the background of your image frame and want to export what you see in the viewport? In that case just render it! Then apply the edited background with 'screen' projection.
alfa smyrna
OK let me explain a bit more. ( By the way I know I am complicating things but please bear with me ) I put a sky background - it is a partial sky. I applied a sherical environment mapping and set tiling and have nice results that I think can be a starting point. I need to paint on it so I can have it exactly the way I like. ( I want to be able to delete some parts, delete some trees in horizon, create more variations other than some obvious tiling) And I want these changes to be appearing in reflections in a big pond I have on the foreground. So if I just render the background and modify it, then this will not solve my problem. I will try the panorama exporter- I hope it will solve it. Stephen Thomas
If you are trying to start with a small FOV photo of a sky and turn it into a spherical image to show in reflections then I think you are giving yourself a lot of unnecessary work to do. Why not try and find a 360° sky that you like as a starting point, there are plenty of free ones out there. Try http://cgtextures.com/ for starters. alfa smyrna
yes I know... This is not a typical workflow I follow. But I am working on a personal scene where sky is important to me and I want to be able to touch with hand. First I will try some of the methods and if I cant find any solution, I will try searching for a similar 360 degree sky and paint on it. Thanks a lot. Stephen Thomas
Perhaps if you found one that matched closely enough it would do for reflections, and you could still hand paint the background? Or even hand-paint reflections on the water in photoshop? Just some ideas
alfa smyrna
Yes, thanks for the ideas =) I will try all and will see whichever fits the best.
