Dave Buckley
Right So it turns out I didn't realise quite how much I relied on Revit for architectural modeling. Now I don't have it I'm using Max for everything (or trying to learn how to again). I've modelled the basic architecture of a building based on some images grabbed from ArchDaily just to build up my portfolio. It didn't take too long but I can't help thing there must have been an easier way. I've attached the images i'm working with and wondering how you'd approach it? I ended up tracing the out line with splines and ended up with one piece of wall which I extruded, then poly modelled the rest. I'm not sure though if it would have been easier making separate splines for different walls etc due to the double heights and varying wall thicknesses. Would I have been better leaving gaps in between wall splines where there are windows and then filling the blanks? I initially covered the gaps and then subtracted using slices and bridges to create openings? I seemed to do a look of 'Create Polygon too to keep it clean. Anyway interested to hear your thoughts. cupsster
trace image in CAD leave blank where windows and doors but close spline for all "wall parts" bring in convert to poly extrude select blanks polygons slice at openings heights bridge make doors & windows make ceiling & floor furnish [can be time consuming] light materials light materials render go for beer done basic unfurnished model of that first picture should be done in under [max.] 2 hours
Dave Buckley
thanks, I have modelled it and it did take a lot less than 2 hours but I can't help but think I could have done it quicker you say leave blank for windows and doors but then yu also say select blanks poly's? how does that work if it's just a gap? cupsster
polyes at positions where doors and windows should be.. then slice at heights
Koper
Dave, don't think there is a quicker way than how you did it. The only way quicker would be if you did this type of modeling allot and work in expert mode
Dave Buckley
thanks for letting me know makes me feel better. if I was just doing the exterior I wouldn't care but i need to think about both in and out etc. just practising different methods. i know it doesn't really matter as long as the end result looks correct but I like to keep as clean as possible. i guess I can always detach later on for different materials etc
Dave Buckley
one question I do have though is with regards the window to the right of the kitchen, there are no pictures in the collection that clearly depict it and I don't have plans or details. does anyone with any construction experience know how this window is working. Just on a count of modeling the frame? can anyone point me in the direction of some diagrams for this type of window?
cupsster
yep, for sure.. It's hard to estimate work for a person you newer saw workin' next to you so that was that 2 hours.. for sure it can be a LOT quicker... find your habit and polish it to maximum
Dave Buckley
this is how I have depicted that window working (attached a base model) could someone please let me know if this would be correct
