.DWG to Max import question

Hi all,

A couple of my clients have now made the switch over to Revit and I am having a few problems working with their drawing files. Normally, when I have imported a .dwg file into Max, it would create one object for each layer. With the Revit files, however, it seems that it creates a seperate object for each window, door, etc. regardless of whether you have it set to derive objects from layer, or any of the other heirachy options. Is there any way around this, or a way to force Max to not import these objects as Vizblocks, but rather just create an mesh object for each imported layer? Any help would be much appreciated. I am running Max 2009 64 bit.

Thanks,

Jason

Revit doesn't actually have "layers" it has a totally different way of managing objects by visibility groups and it's all based more around object types. When you export from Revit to DWG you have options to setup overrides to how it layers out all the geometry / objects.... So what you'll want to do is coordinate with your client how they setup the export that they are giving you.

If the model isn't too heavy you'll be better off to use and FBX file for transferring geometry. The biggest benefit is being able to use the file link to keep and active link to the Revit model, and you it gives you alot of options such as joining objects by material. However if you're working on a large scale project, FBX is a bit bloated and cumbersome.
