Mental ray - matte replacement?!

It turned on that matte material does not emit photons :) !

so how can I do this (the first picture below) with mental ray!? and how the montages and speed background env animations will work?!

I got to know the basics of mental ray materials in max 6 but I couldn't figured out a nice looking solution.I also can't figure out why my absolutely white color material (does not matter is it mr, standart or arch mat) appears grey in render frame (the second picture below)

any ideas :) ?!

The Matte Material is a material that renders your background, it doesn't render its own color.

For you to do that, you need to use a Camera Map and map the background on the object. That will make it render.

As for white - white is subjective. Your floor looks white to me, not gray. It just looks white with not so much light falling on it.

I'm familiar with the characteristics of the matte material Alex but when I tried to use it with MR renderer there was "no photons emited".I did not wait to see if there gonna be a shadow or not. the first picture above (the vacum cleaner) has been made with a matte material applied on the floor and white background color with the defalt max renderer.

I looked for similar topics in other forums and nobody have given solution y this problem. May be there is a different aprouch to what I want to achieve...may be U are asking yourself what is it :) - Simple design expose on white floor with white background (but not like the second picture that I posted above)

for reference check this:

The shadow wouldn't be generated by the photons. You're talking about two different things. One is skylight Illumination. That's not GI. It doesn't use Photons. All it needs is Final Gather in mental ray, and Light Tracer in the Scanline.

The second thing is GI, Photons. That's when light bounces back between two objects. I personally do not know if Matte Shadow material supports it or not. I would assume it doesn't, since the object itself has no color, it has no knowledge of where the background is in relationship to the camera, etc. That's why you should use a Camera Map.

But, if all you want to do is a white background color, why are you using Matte Shadow? Just use a white plane.

Alex I didn't want this thread to turn in personal dispute but whatever :)

First of all I have never said that the shadow is generated by the photons.

Second who's talking about "skylight Illumination"...I have never said a word about it

And third - the second picture at the beginning of my thread is actually a blue cube on a white plane.... but as U see it's not what I'm looking for!

Pls check out the cell phone pictures...now compair it with my cube siene....see the difference in the floor!? That's my GOAL! With the defalt renderer and matte material it is easy...but how to make it with MR?!

I don't know what you want to do to be honest. I'm talking with my experience and trying to help you based on what I see and understand from what you're showing. The pictures you have of the vacuum and of the red object are using skylight illumination, or some sort of dome light.

I created a perfectly white standard material plane, a perfectly white skylight, a teapot, switched renderer to mental ray, added Final Gather and rendered. It looked perfectly fine, and with a white background I cannot see where the background ends and where the floor starts.

I hope it helps. If it doesn't, I hope someone else can understand what you want to do and can provide you help.
