Patch or Nurbs?

I've been getting into more organic modeling recently.

 

When you choose to use patch or nurbs modeling in 3DS Max, is it a personal choice like vray vs mental ray, or is there actually a better time to use one over the other? I'm thinking about flowing, organic architecture.

 

I know that nurbs hasn't been updated in Max for a long time, but they still seem powerful enough for most of my needs.

 

Of course, box modeling works great for 80% of what I do, but sometimes you need a smooth, organic surface.
