djoshi
How to map the road texture with lines on curved & sloping roads..Can it be possible by using Unwrap UVW..? How to use that?
sanmb
You have to model road and lines saperately. The simple way i use.
djoshi
Not only the that divider lines but tire trails (Dark-light pattern)also...
sanmb
That can be done in photoshop.
Scott Dombrowski
Check out spline mapping in the Max help file. I've used this for bending a road texture onto curved roads with good success.
Stephen Thomas
If you use loft or sweep to create your road then it will generate the mapping for you.
djoshi
stef.thomas & nauticus27, But usually I make roads with edit mesh as it is on sloping & heavy contours. What to do if thats the condition?
Scott Dombrowski
Like stef.thomas said, lofting or sweeping a road is the easiest way because it automagically generates your mapping for you. But if your road is a mesh, you'll need to generate the centerline of your road as a continuous spline in order to use spline mapping. One rough way is to put an edit poly modifier on your road, select the edge of the road in edge sub-object mode, then "Create Shape From Selection". That gives you a spline on the edge of the road. Go into the spline sub-object mode and "outline" that spline to generate line segments in the center of your road. Delete the segments on the edge of the road, and you'll be left with a spline more or less at the center of your road. I uploaded a few images to Imageshack to demonstrate this. An alternative way is to freehand draw a spline in the top view, tracing the middle of your road as best you can. Then use Itoo's Glue plugin to conform that spline to your road. Dave Buckley
don't even need to use Itoo, can simply draw the line over your 3d geometry using graphite and it will detect the surface anyway. go to the freeform tab of the graphite tools and you should see a 'spline' option, lets you draw a spline over your geometry
Crazy Homeless Guy
Not a direct answer, but I would recommend building the roads before you build the slope, and then building the slope to work with the road instead of the other way around. The reason for this is that the road is a man made construction. It will be level, or crowned going across the surface. By building the road first you are able to build how it actually would function, and eliminate the possibility that it will look like it is pasted onto a hill.
