Kaneth
Hello, My name is Kane Forrester and I am a 23yr old postgraduate games technologies student from the UK. My thesis attempts to understand the division between games technologies and wider business, using architecture and architectural visualization as a case study. I would be grateful to any professionals who have 10 minutes to spare to complete my short survey. Your answers synthesized with the answers from my games industry contacts will provide a basis of debate that I will expand upon through research. Your opinions are extremely valued and your privacy is too. You personal details are stored on a secure webserver and will only be viewed by myself and my academic supervisor, any publishing of information will be anonymous via a "Subject X" naming convention. Kaneth
Had a couple of good responses to this but it does not represent a fair survey at the moment. If you are involved with Arch Vis production, please spend the 5 minutes it takes to fill out the survey
Dave Buckley
Kane Which University is this for if you don't mind me asking? Just that I notice your in Staffordshire?

Dave Buckley
I went there myself. I studied Digital Film & 3D Animation Tech. Who is your course tutor? I was based at the Staffs campus though, not Stoke
Kaneth
I also went to the nerdy Stafford Campus. I would say my main tutor is Greg Penninck, but im sure you know John Morton and some of the other veteran legends there
Dave Buckley
Haha, 'nerdy' 'all male' the list goes on. Good courses though. Hows Legends haha, still 'booming'? You must have been in the year below me? Yep John was my Max tutor, must say though that my relationship/attendance wasn't that great :$ The guy I got to know best was Dan McCarthy - maya guy, he guided me through most of my FYP. Is he still there? I made the transition to Arch Viz during my FYP having done all the games/film related stuff during the course, decided to take a different track. Oh and have just done your survey
Kaneth
Dan McCarthy is still there, never got taught by him as im a Max pro (Can use Maya but I'm not a fan) he's in room C160 with all the games tutors now. Legends is still 'boomin' one of my female friends went recently and said things have got even worse. She was one of 6 women in the club that night lol. Interesting you went arch viz route. I'm trying to bridge the gap between games tech and arch viz tech, or at the very least explore it.
Dave Buckley
I'm not a fan of Maya either. I used Max for my thesis and for all my Maya assignments Just exported everything to Maya and saved in Maya format for hand-ins. You'll find a few people on here that have made the switch from games to arch viz, I've seen it mentioned a few times. You might get a better response on a more generic forum though like 'The Area' or 'CGSociety'. I think games tech methods are being adapted by the Arch-Viz industry, but more for the emerging technologies that we are seeing - Augmented Reality and the likes, methods such as texture-baking for interactive models. You might wanna check out the likes of Lumion and Twinmotion - two very recent products that I know very little about. But from all the pre-talk before they were released, I'm sure I heard that they were built on similar tech to that of games engines? Someone might read this though and completely blow me out of the water so don't take it as gospel. http://lumion3d.com/ http://www.twinmotion.com/
Kaneth
I simply don't have the time available to investigate it all so im loving the 2 links you've provided with a bit of context. I think I may post on the area, unsure of the reaction I would get from CGSociety though. Can't hurt however
