sdds
forgive me if I missing a trick here. how does one deal with unclamped highlights if you are outputting to floating point format? these little pixels that are brighter than white do they need to be fixed in post? Subpixal mapping helps somewhat and oviously clamping output fixes it at the expense of loosing pixel data. so how can this be worked around? Ismael
A really bad photo..., there is no post that can help it. How do photographers deal with light? Of course, amateurs just point and click...

Do you have a reason for keeping the pixel data of the over bright pixels? I say clamp those suckers. Unless you are doing some fancy specular blooms that need that over bright pixel. If not, I don't see a reason for saving it. And if I was doing something with the unclamped over bright pixel data I might consider using the unclamped render element for th information, and keeping my beauty pass more manageable. sdds
Your probably right Travis, I dont really need all of it. maybe alter the clamp number as you have suggested in other posts. I am interested how it would be managed though if you wanted that much control. say you wanted to do a lot of exposure/colour correction. I guess its a sacrifice like you need to up your AA setings to compensate.
Crazy Homeless Guy
IMO 16bit clamped space gives you more than enough color for color correction. It simply does not allow you to color correct beyond 0 and 1.0, so you need to make sure everything you want to use falls within 0 and 1.0. This means finessing you lighting for the rendering to keep blow outs under control. 8 bit color = 16 Million colors for editing. 16 bit color = 281 Trillion(?) colors for editing.
