YorK
Hello you all I plan to buy a new workstation for working with 3dsmax Design 2011 64bits and VRay 2.0. The thing I don't know is: do I have to go for ECC or non ECC RAM ? Other specs of my future machine: Tyan S7010AGM2NRF motherboard (which can work with both ECC and non ECC RAM), dual Xeon 5650 (2 x 6cores @ 2.66GHz), Gainward GeForce GTX 580 Phantom 3Go DDR5, 24 Go DDR3 1333 RAM (PC10600), OCZ Revodrive 180Go RAID0 SSD, Windows 7 Pro 64bits, HP ZR30W display Thank you in advance for your answers
AJLynn
I've been using computers since before they came with hard drives, and have never had a problem that ECC RAM would have prevented. The only reason I can think of to buy ECC RAM is if the MB requires it. I don't know that board, but if it's true that it lets you choose ECC or not, I'd say save your money and go with not. (But get memory that's on the manufacturer's list for that board if it's available.)
YorK
Thank you AJLynn, I'll go for non ECC.
ihabkal
go for non ecc, they ar echeaper and when you want to sell th enon ecc or buy more to upgrade it will be so much easier. ECC are only good for banks and similar critical governemnt agencies where data errors can cause serious problems. I had ECC and non ECC, non ECC is a tiny bit faster too cause it doens't need to recheck itself.
