Stephen Thomas
I just can't seem to figure out cloth simulations in max and it's getting frustrating as surely it must be a fairly simple exercise? I am following Fran's tutorial here: http://surrealstructures.com/blog/?p=229 But when I hit simulate local all manner of weird things happen. The cloth jumps up in the air, some polygons stay flat and the whole thing is a mess. What am I missing? I'm using 3ds Max 2010 and scene units are meters. Noise
Change your units to millimetres and retry the whole process again - see if that works.
Stephen Thomas
Yeah, it's definitely a units problem. Which is why I metntioned it in the first place. Got it to work in a new scene file with scene units set to inches. Surely it should work with any unit settings though? Noise
I had exactly the same problem and it worked with millimetres.
Stephen Thomas
Yeah, cheers. Got it working now!

If you want to keep using metrics (which cloth is rubbish with as you've found out) you really need extremely high density meshes for the cloth and the collision objects to work as expected - even then it can be a nightmare. If you find the cloth is passing through the collison object only slightly, then just increase the collision offset value. One other thing to try is using the garment maker for the cloth mesh, rather than a high-density plane. This sometimes works better. Failing that - use inches
Noise
Its not just the Cloth modifier, I have found many things that don't work when the units are set to metres for example the DOF in a Vray Physical Camera to name just one.
Stephen Thomas
Technically I don't suppose there is any real need to change the system units from inches, as you can use whatever display units you like. It's just the standard we use here, across the board, for max, sketchup, rhino, autocad.
