Geometry Will Not Group

When I select a series of pieces of geometry I cannot group them.

 

If however, I select one of those pieces of geometry and create a Group then individually Attach each of the other pieces of geometry I will then eventually end up with all the initial geometry I wanted as a group.

 

Does anyone have a solution to this ?

are the pieces part of another group which is currently open? You could try going to "group - close" and doing that until it is no longer an option then "group - explode". I also recall that with Max 9 (maybe) you could run into some weird instances where a group could be opened, the container deleted and then the objects from the group would could not be grouped together because max could not find the container.
