"command in progress" error on saving

Every once in a while I get this Autocad error message when I try to save a drawing. "- - - - .dwg has a command in progress. Hit enter to cancel or retry". And of course I had NO commands in progress. So the only way to save my drawing was by typing in the "quit" command.

Now its happening very frequently for some reason and I have no idea why. Has anybody else found a solution to this, or know why this happens?

I had that problem as well. 2004. Haven't really modeled in Autocad since I installed 2005.

I was always able to save my drawing somehow without loosing any changes. Can't remember exactly how though. It has something to do I think with being locked in the orbit command I think. At least, I think that was my problem. Can you right-click and exit the command? Don't give up, troubleshoot the problem. It's apparently pretty common.

Don't reinstall!! I know you said you wouldn't do that, but I'm saying it too!! Don't do it! :)

just a tip - hope that may help - pres ESC several times next time there is an error - it should CANCEL the command...

LOL!!! If only the obvious was what we were missing. I'm sure we've all tried that more than a few dozen times with no luck with this particular glitch.

Eric I don't know if U did or did not press the ESC button!

So the reason why U are so affected from my "tip" would stay a mystery for me :).I tald U all the right way to deal fast with the problem - RE_INSTALL!

and then if u r still willing ask the gyes from autodesk why is this happening!

in other case I think U R waisting your valiuabl time...

cheers all

Reinstalling will not fix a glitch. A glitch is a glitch. It will still be there after the reinstall. And the fact that 3 people are now stating they've had the same issue further convinces me that reinstalling Autocad will not fix anything, and will only waste more time by the time we've reconfigured all of our paths and custom buttons and miscellaneous settings inside of autocad.

No offense, but the "esc" key was probably the first thing any of us hit as daily production users of Autocad.

U R right it's the first KEY to hit :)

But as U know yourself sometimes one strike is not enough!

if the problem is because of changed defalt setings and adding different additional software THE REINSTALL will fix the problem!

If it is a bug the people who wrote the code for the software will fix the problem!

So Boyz and Girlz I rest my case :)

Ok, chill out, guys...

That problem's been really common with release 2004. We have been experiencing it quite often at our ATC. I'm not sure it's abug, because we have 50 licenses running (all installed via Ghost) and only some machines have that annomally. What I normally do is to start a new command and then end it. Undo is a good one. That normally works.

We also have this issue in some machines. We noticed that working in shademode has more possibilities of this error. Multiple files opened in shademode even worse. Reducing Dynamic tessellation helped us a lot to reduce occurance of this message. In preferences dialog goto System Tab and click Properties in 3D graphic Display box. Reduce both surface and curve tessellation.

It should help.

We have the same problem as well, in 2004. It only happens when you are working on 3D models, flipping around 3Dorbit and using shademodes. It is infact a royal pain. You get that sinking feeling everytime it happens hoping the "quit" command works.

Oh well another oddity of AutoCAD.

chucuSCAD

P.S. I did also have this problem in 2002 but only when working on REALLY big files IE 60MB or better.
