Guest archikre
What do you consider the best(quick &easy) method to model complex 3D roofs (hip/gables with dormers, etc)? I use ADT 2004 roof slabs + 3Ds Max, but have the feeling there must be something simpler!
STRAT
the 'best' isn't nesesarily the quickest and easiest. i face model mine in adt/autocad. i dont use any plugins or fast modelling techniques - not as accurate and too un-individual for my liking. Ken Walton
I totally agree with Strat here - I use ArchiCAD for most of my modeling and it's got some pretty customizable tools for building an advanced roof. BUT - The results are not nearly as accurate or detailed as what I can make in Max by simply lining up and freezing my front and side elevation drawings, then tracing the roof lines and extruding the appropriate distance. In the past I was insistent on having every edge meet cleanly with no intersecting geometry, but lately I've realized that what I can't see (a dormer that extends into the main roof) isn't really hurting me. I'm also able to get all of the trim detail in at the same time. http://www.cgarchitect.com/forum/filepush.asp?file=roof_detail.jpg I'm alot newer to this than most of the people here, and they may have a million reasons as to why NOT to do it this way (I'd love to hear them, and find out the "real" way), but it seems to be producing the most accurate results for me so far.
