branskyj
Hi all, I have two Gigabyte Ethernet ports on my workstation. In one of them I have plugged in my Internet cable for the web access. In the other one I have plugged in a cable which leads to a wireless router which connects my workstation to two more PCs. The problem is I can only have one of the two at the same time- either Internet connection or the connection between the PCs. Now, when both Ethernet ports are connected, in my Network and Sharing Center I have two Networks. Must I have different types of Networks for my Internet and LAN PCs? Like Home for the LAN PCs and Work(or Public) for the Internet? How do I tell my workstation which port to use for the Internet and which port for the LAN PCs? Why can't I use both ports at the same time with no problems? I am running Windows7 Ultimate. Thanks for the help.
Jeff Mottle
You don't have your devices in the right order. I've attached an PDF of how this type of network should be set up.
Jeff Mottle
In my examples, you would use a switch depending upon the location of your internet connection in relation to the PCs. For example in my home network the cable modem and router are in a network box in the basement, and I have a switch in my office to split between the various other devices. If everything is in the same location, then you can get rid of the switch until you have more devices than the router has ports.
