imaginenz
I'm a Bachelor of Visual Arts student in Dunedin. Came to this site because I am doing a project on re- imaging a part of Dunedin. That project lead me to Google Earth, then Sketch-up , now doing the tutorials in Sketch-up. Finally it was suggested I produce some watercolour sketches , like you know , on paper , real water color ! . But was looking at digital techniques to do the same in Sketchup, which is why Google lead me here. Its a huge field , this CGI thing, but I must say I like the Mission statement here , "a community of architectural visionaries" , because I really believe in the value of good architecture and public sculpture to change the urban landscape for the better .I don't have a lot of time over the next two days until I'm finished, so I'll read any comments rest assured , but may not reply until later . Thanks for a great website . Mike
Rich O
Are you at Aoraki Poly or Otago Poly, out of interest? As far as I know no one does rendering in Dunedin...there's Phorm in Queenstown, DigiViz in Timaru/Christchurch, and myself setting up in Invercargill (also to target the lower South). What level of quality were you going for? I take it you've never done CG before?
creasia
Hi guys, I was a missionary in Christchurch and Dunedin, so NZ holds a special place in my heart. I have been doing 3D graphics for the past 13 years. If you are a traditional artist and are learning Sketchup, you want to learn more about Piranesi software. http://www.piranesi.co.uk/ I am a Max user from way back. You can check out my stuff here. http://www.foresight3d.com I was sorry to hear about earthquake damage to some of the well known buildings there. imaginenz
Thanks Richard , this forum is quite un-user-friendly , and I am quite experienced in some fields of computing, so lost my whole reply two days ago .Anyway, that's history . I am at Otago Poly, the Art School in central Dunedin . I am just aiming to get a flythrough , show my model in Google Earth, IN SCALE , is the most important thing. I actually have to produce a manual drawing for the brief , due tomorrow , so all this computer stuff is just fluff that interests me . Sketchup , I have found a steep leaning curve into 3D modelling, as for rendering , well , thats way beyond me at this stage , could learn if I needed to for a brief, or to take my proposals for public sculptural pieces to the funders . So not interested in rendering for a job at this stage , I am doing Excel programming as a parttime earning money job , and thats all the extra time I want to spend on a computer !. Hope that answers your questions , and thanks for your interest . I believe there are some very skilled film-makers here in Dunedin , film special effects are an area that could interest me if it helps get across an idea . Cheers Mike
imaginenz
Thanks Creasia The positive side of the earthquake is that there is some great opportunities for architects here , visionary's , I saw a rendered photo of Christchurch re-imaged in a local paper , so if you feel you have something to contribute skill wise, go for it !. Any software I use has to be free or availible to me on the Otago Poly computer systems but will look into Piranesi Thanks for your interest Mike
creasia
I'd love to lend a hand. I've thought of teaching as well. Perhaps I could work my way back down there somehow. I'll have to look into it, if you guys have any contacts, let me know.
imaginenz
Hi Shaun I love Canada , spent 3 months in Toronto going to Academy of Realistic Art in 2007. Anyway check out the staff pages at http://www.otagopolytechnic.ac.nz/schools-departments/architecture-building-engineering.html And try Otago University for architecture , also Canterbury University in Christchurch and other places teaching architecture in Christchurch. Just watched a Frank Gerhy video lat night , very inspiring , love those curves !. Anyway , he valdiated the process of model making , sketching manually , ironic I should be saying this on here , but I feel I am a ideas person, better people than me can do rendering , computer modelling like he does Mike
M V
SketchUp + a passion for watercolor can lead to some interesting things. Check out Dennis Burden as well as Jim Leggit. They both do insane hybrid stuff.
