Workstation buying advice thread for April

Recommended Posts

The last two time I upgraded my computer I bought some parts at Microcenter and others at Newegg. Both times the Microcenter CPU prices were much lower than any other vendor's. It's also the only B&M store near me that actually sells good parts at reasonable prices. (Contrast with Best Buy, where they're happy to sell you a video card from two years ago at twice the original price.)

Well Andrew, do you think I am better off just getting a CPU that will work with my ASUS P6T Deluxe MB (LGA 1366 X58) and keeping my 12GB memory or going the Sandy Bridge route again, with new ram and MB? Where's the bang for the buck?

Oh, wait, this is from a previous question - sorry, distracted :) Get yourself a 6-core for your current MB - a 970 or a 980X if you're near a Microcenter. (The difference between a 970 and a 980X is barely noticeable unless you want to overclock.)

Well, if you need to work with scenes you can't fit in 16GB that's going to rule out 16GB systems. What do you have now and have you tried similarly difficult renders on it? And have you used memory optimizing techniques like instances and proxies?

atm i work on a i7 920 with 6gb ram. So 16gb will do it better.
