Crazy Homeless Guy
I am searching for the best script / method for detaching 'random' elements from a editable mesh or editable poly. Any recommendations? I have tried a few scripts and methods, but the mesh is heavy enough that after processing for an hour the computer is still just sitting there. Currently I am trying to randomly detach leaf planes from a an Onyx leaf mesh. I don't have the original Onyx file to resort to, and all of the leaf planes currently have the same ObjectID. EDIT: The mesh I am working with has 928,000 polygons and roughly 232,000 elements. I need to select and detach maybe 2% of those to turn them into flowers instead of leaves. eagle_ear
Depends on what kind of tree it is... Haha, just kidding. This is a noble endeavor, flowers on trees...
cgrant3d
IMHO the best way to do this is to use the Material by Element modifier. Let it randomly assign mat id's to your object then throw an edit mesh on top and detach elements with the ID you want. It's super fast - shouldn't take long even on your high poly tree. Peter M. Gruhn
After Chris's suggestion, I'm not even going to finish thinking about solutions.

Worked like a charm. Many thanks. Oh, ...and it only took maybe 20 seconds compared to the hour the various random select script on Scriptspot were taking.
