Devin Johnston
I'm doing an animation using IR & LC, I've done hundreds of animations using these same settings so I know they work but I'm getting some strange results that I've never seen before. As you can see some machines are rendering this strange pixel effect, my first thought is that the maps are somehow not access able but the entire building has the same map on it so the whole thing should look the same. My next thought is that the machines are running out of ram but some of the machines have 12 gigs and this animation only need 6 so I don't think that's it. Anyone got any ideas? alias_marks
smells like a bad geometry problem. Have you tried to just remodel that piece right quick? edit: hmm, just re-read, and it looks like some machines are picking it up and some aren't so maybe my suggestion is off. That is pretty strange..
Devin Johnston
I don't think it's bad geometry because the next frame will be fine.
Chewbacca
I have had this happen to frames as well on certain machines. Never figured out why...
Devin Johnston
How did you get around it?
Chewbacca
If I submited a job via BB before leaving the office the next day I saw that errored frames the next morning and I was able to trace back what machine was rendering out the strange artifacts. I then just turned of the that machine BB server, deleted the bad frames, and re-rendered turning on the "skip existing frames option". Sorry not much help. My best guess would be something to do with how that machine is accesing the saved IR maps. Edited April 6, 2011 by Chewbacca
JonRashid
It may be shared geometry. Whichever gets the preference in draw order can change from frame to frame. Not saying thats it but I have had it happen when I left a legacy polygon sharing the same space as a textured poly
Devin Johnston
Are you saying you think it's a coplanar object?
JonRashid
Sometimes I have accidentally shift clicked a poly and created a duplicate occupying the same space. I have then applied a multi sub mat and ended up with a textured poly and an untextured one in the same place. On different renders the draw order changes and sometimes it is combined. I just delete that poly and see if there is still one there or run an stl-check on the object
Ricardo Eloy
Have you tried setting the secondary rays bias to 0.01? If it's a geometry problem, that might help.
Devin Johnston
I've switched to brute force and that seems to have fixed the problem but I don't know why.
Ricardo Eloy
Could it be that the info needed to interpolate the solution can't/couldn't be found on time? I'm guessing this because the main change would be the lack of interpolation when you switched to brute force. Could be a network issue, then. Chewbacca
Maxer, Was your LC and IR files larger then they typically are in the past for you? If I remember right, when this had happen to me it typically happened on larger projects....
Devin Johnston
Yea they were pretty big and I'm pretty sure that had something to do with it.
