R.Stewart
Hey there everybody, I've been working hard on the attached scene and I would love to hear some feedback by some people who know what they're talking about. I did no modeling in this just set up the scene materials and lights. Also I need to know which are the best books to learn from. I'm on 3dats 2008 now. It's a bit out dated but still I think the 3 books together must hold some great wisdom. Ok I look forward to hearing from someone soon.
TSuess
It would be nice to see a bit of the ceiling. I would change to aspect ratio of the image in order to do so or back up the camera if you can or widen the lens. The lamp is lighting the walls but the lamp shade itself is not illuminated. The Shadows for the wall art and shelving seem liitle off. It may be because I cannot see the light source. I'm not a fan of the overall beige tone of the image. The pin light above the art seems to small to create such a wide area of light. What software are you using?
R.Stewart
Thanks for the input. I'm glad you pointed those things out. The aspect ratio hey. I'm sure that's not hard to do I'll look into it. I was going for the high ceiling look like there could be an upstairs that looked down. I guess I'd need to show more of the room for that. What do you think about the matt and the couch material? I guess they gave me the most trouble. I'm using 3ds max 2011 with mental ray. How did you learn Arch vis and what do you use?
TSuess
I got my degree in Industrial Design so I had a 3d Modeling background from school. My first Job was as a CAD drafter for an Architecture Firm. A client asked for a rendering and I told my boss I could do it. That was in 1999, I've been doing Arch Viz exclusively since 2003. The best advice I could give you would be to scrutinize realworld photography and ask a lot of questions. CGA is really the best place for that. Books are good but they don't give you feedback. There are some good Blog's out there too. I think these are the two best for Mental Ray: http://mentalraytips.blogspot.com/ http://3dsmaxrendering.blogspot.com/ I also use 3dsMax>MentalRay>Photoshop. The couch material seems fine. Not sold on the beige tone though. If this room was a loft, as you suggested, the coolest thing about the room would be the fact that it is a loft. You would want to show that. Your Image size now is 800x480 so that's an aspect ratio of 5:3, I would widen the lens and change the the aspect ratio to 1:1. Make the image 800x800. The most dynamic way to light a room IMO is to use natural daylight. I would suggest looking into that option. If you need help let me know. R.Stewart
haha "not sold on the beige" You are right for sure about books not giving feedback, but maybe they will one day haha I'm just learning from books in my spare time while I study at tafe. I'm part the way through a diploma in building design and since learning max and revit I've been really excited about my new career path. I plan to go on to do a VGC (vocational graduate certificate) in digital architectural illustration. The VGC is quite a prestigious certificate apparently, I'd never heard of a VGC till this year. I did show my 3ds max teacher this and he liked it but told me I should get on this website so here I am!! Thanks a lot for your advice mate. I'll make some adjustments and post again after I have some sleep. Oh and I'll loose the beige : D Also can you give me some advice on using the cloth modifier? I tried to use it to drop a cloth on the back of a couch and it fell through it!! and sometimes it bounced off!! crazy. I did as many tutorials as I could find on it but to no avail. Ok I'm off to bed for now. Thanks again
R.Stewart
Hey mate, I finally got around to working on this project again. can you give me some advice on illuminating the lamp material. I tried playing with self illumination but didn't get anything realistic looking. Cheers
