Bruce Hart
Hi Dusan If you want to work on a new material in the Editor, select a swatch and hit the red X button to clear it. Provide a new material name and you can go from there. As for your your text - you could try a quadify mesh modifier to the object to give turbosmooth some polygons to work with. This will have the effect of filleted corners. If it's only a small fillet you need to show, you could try a rounded corner shader.

SgWRX
if i understand correctly, you should be able to 'get material' in a sample slot that already has another material and it does not affect the material in the scene. so lets say you have brick in the material editor sample slot and aluminum in the scene. if you get the aluminum material where the brick is, it won't affect the scene or brick material. as far as saving to mat lib, i do it by clicking on the 'get material' and that opens up my list of library's then i right-click on the name of the library and that gives me options, under the options i go to the first in the list which shows a path c:\whatever\whatever... and that's where i can save that library. i actual ran into a problem a while ago in Max9 where i found that the lib file (.mat file) was set to 'read only'. so the save never worked. so now i make sure the file is read-write before i try and save to it.
