markf
I have a basic exterior scene. I have a background jpg map inthe Max environment slot. Instanced top the MatEd with Environment Screen mapping. I'm using the basic VrayMtl. For any material that I add reflection amount to the reflection causes the object using that material to become semi transparent. The more I increase the reflective amount the more transparent the object becomes. The objects do not reflect they just become transparent and I can see through directly to the environment map. Is this normal Vray behavior? Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong or overlooking? Using Max Design 2011 , Vray 1.5, Win XP 64 bit Edited April 21, 2011 by markf
aaronrumple
It isn't becoming transparent. Just more reflective. Since your background and what is being reflected are the same image - it looks like it is doing transparency. Delete the map from the material enviornment slot. Let the material reflect what is really around it.
markf
Thanks for your reply! It really doesn't appear to be reflecting the environment map because there is no change of angle due to viewing position. The background image appears thru the object as if you are looking straight thru to the background. IOW I can move the camera around and it has no effect on the way the objects become transparent (or reflection if that is what is really happening) and the environment background image appears behind the objects. As the camera moves around shouldn't the part of the environment being reflected also move/change? Thnaks for helping me to understand this. erickdt
Aaron is correct. Your problem is that your environment is set to screen mapping. IOW no matter where you move your camera/viewpoint the background image will appear the same. Same is true of the POV from your reflections which intern makes them seem like they're becoming transparent. If you change your reflection map in the environment rollout of VRay to something different than what's in your background map slot in MAX's environment your problem should be solved.
