vozdra
I'm trying to achevie an effect almost exactly as the one shown in these pictures (metal cladding). I was wondering on how to achieve this... Were the metal panels modelled or are they simply a material with some maps?? Help please! link: http://www.peterguthrie.net/blog/2010/05/allandale-exteriors/ more detailed pic: http://www.peterguthrie.net/img/4bda976b.jpg http://www.peterguthrie.net/img/4bda977a.jpg Edited April 26, 2011 by vozdra
John Dollus
with those small angled bends on the ends, i'd model it in if it was as small of an area as the example of a residential house. if the shot is of a larger surface area, more complex than simple plane surfaces or from a greater distance, i'd do it with maps and a couple utility passes instead
Crazy Homeless Guy
+1 on modeling, but if you are going to use maps, I would definitely make sure they are normal maps, and not just bumps. But if you want the best results, model it.
JonRashid
I agree model it or you will be tweaking the map depending on dist from camera and angle using normal map.
Claudio Branch
Definitely model it...even if the camera isn't close. When you start moving your primary light source around, it will pay off. Without geometry, it is going to look mapped in brightly lit scenes. The modeling is nothing really. All you need to do is be strategic with your segments while using Editable Poly commands and renderable splines. A quick eyeballing with a bit of exaggeration for illustrative purposes... Wrender
It looks like a flat-lock vmzinc panel (color anthracite?)....their website has a sketchup model already made with the correct profiles. They also have dwg details if that would be easier. *shrug* Might save you a step or two. https://www.vmzinc-us.com/Flatlock.aspx
Dave Buckley
And if I know Peter and the detail he puts into his models, i'd put my house on them being modelled in those examples
zhopudey
Wouldn't renderable splines on top of a plane be easier?
