exxoo
Hi I was trying out the displacement map in AD material in a project but didnt get it to work. So now when i have some time to spare i tried it out and i cant get it to work with my system units set to millimeters. I think the effect is there but really small. I started a new scene and set system units to inches (display units to millimeters). I created a sphere 500m radius and created a material, the textures are all Real world size 500x500mm. And all works fine. If i do the same but sets system units to millimeters the effect is so small, barley noticeable until i max out Displacement value to 10. Inches, displacement valu 1 mm, displacement valu 10 Why is this? I cant get the displacement valu over 10, so if i use mm as units i cant do any drastic displacement at all, barely noticeable... How do you set up your system? Do you use inches as system unit and display units to mm? How does that affect your import etc? If mm affects displacement in this manner i would guess that if affects more stuff... mattclinch
are you talking about the displacement value of the displacement channel in the material editor? you set the displacement amount by right clicking the object and going to properties > mental ray > displacement and unlinking it from the global defaults and entering your desired values. if you don't change the displacement values on the objects you are probably running in to trouble as the global default displacement max is the value '20' and 20 inches will look stronger than 20mm... exxoo
Thanx, that solved the displacement value But i still has an issue with Max dialogs that just wants a number without units. The maximum value should be the same height, not 20 inches vs 20mm. It should not matter if the program is in mm or inches, why let us pick a unit when no magic happens behind the scenes? Stuff just seems to work more smoothly with the program set to inches, or cm maybe..
fourdimensions
Dude.... the value 1 to 10 is linked to the displacement settings in the renderer set-up... in the shadows and displacement roll-out you must set the Max displace. The 1-10 option in the material is a scale from 0 to 10 (your chosen max displace). I'm sure you have discovered this by now though.
