Modo Starter

Hi, all. I've heard and saw a lot about Modo in ArchViz field. But what's your opinion:

[*]1. Does Luxology has capacity to provide bright future to Modo?

[*]2. Is it worth sticking to it?

    Thanks

Hi Tikun,

Welcome to the forum. I use Modo exclusively at work and have nothing but great things to say about it. Here is an article by Neil Hayes; it is a review for Modo 501 for Archviz. If you are serious about using Modo for Archviz work then make sure to check his CADBuddy script. CADBuddy has sped up my modeling significantly. There are also a lot of other third party resources for Modo. Make sure to check Cristobal Vila's Super Aligner Script. Luxology is one of the most responsive companies I have dealt with; they truly listen to their user base. Their CEO, Brad Peebler, is very active on their forum. He shares updates with the community every Friday through a "Modcast". Modo is very affordable in comparison to other 3D packages. Also, there are no subscriptions so you will not have to pay $1500 or so for upgrades every year (Modo's upgrades cost around $300). Granted, Modo doesn't have dedicated tools for character animation yet but there is now a very robust rigging system in place. Also, they just released a plugin called Recoil which takes care of dynamic simulations. All in all, I am very confident about Modo's future. I have been a user since version 101, six or so years ago. So far it has been a very exciting journey; Modo has been one of the best investments I have made to this day. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you very much for your replay. I've seen that Modo is capable and unique. That really makes me happy. I'm not Modo user yet, but I'm thinking to become one. Can you please explain to me how hardware plays important role in the big picture. I mean demands for CPU, GPU, RAM etc. You can imagine that starter like me will not spend much on the begining, so I want to buy laptop for learning Modo first.

Best regards

You should be fine running Modo on a Laptop. I use a MacBookPro at home for all my freelance work and haven't run into any problems. Obviously, like with any other software, the better the workstation the faster Modo will render and function. For 501 Luxology released two versions of Modo, a Carbon (32 bit for lower end workstations) and Cocoa (64 bit for high end workstations). I am running the Cocoa version on the MBP at home and works just fine. At work I am running Modo on a high end MacPro 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Xeon (16 core) 24GB RAM ATI Radeon HD GPU 1GB and have a small render farm with other three MacPros. Needless to say, Modo renders like a champ on these machine :)

One license of Modo gives you access to render on up to 50 workstations. It is very easy to set up a network farm. Simply install Modo on all the render slaves. Run Modo on your main workstation, under preferences make sure that it is set to use all network nodes. Run Modo on the render slaves. You will get a dialog box saying that your license is being used by another workstation and it will give you an option to run on "Slave Mode". After selecting "Slave Mode" you just need to locate a folder that can be access by all machines in the network. That's all! Here is a screen shot of my render farm at work.

I played with Modo before but never got too much into it. 501 makes me really want to start using it and with what you have to say about it, I plan on trying it out soon! Thanks!

Here are a couple of basic tutorials I put together a couple of years ago. They should help you get your feet wet with Modo. I'm planning to release a project based tutorial for architectural visualization this years. I'll post it as soon as I finish.
