servarus
I am a student, just started learning about 3D Max and V-ray. Before this I did everything on mental ray. The problem is, V-ray takes a long time to render. Even when I set it on 320X240. One simple scene of that size takes about 30 minutes to render. Mental Ray did not take that much time. V-ray on Sketchup on the other hand is super fast. I'm using pretty much default settings for 3D Max and V-ray, so I guess probably my hardware is causing the problem? I need help determining it, and maybe suggestion. I got it from my senior.
sanmb
Hi, It seems u r using very high settings and irradiance map settongs are not seen. Try using low settings u can get on searching v-ray settings or http://vray.us/vray_tutorials/universal_vray_15_settings.shtml http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/150SP1/tutorials_unisettings.htm

What do you see that is high?
John Dollus
it doesn't appear that your vray settings would be contributing to long render times. what does your scene look like? with 4gb ram and dynamic mem set to 400mb, a lot of mem swapping would slow things down. servarus
I'm not quite sure the standard of fast of 3D Max V-Ray is. One example of the scene I tried: 12 minutes. Another scene I tried is from this tutorial: http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3d-studio-max/modelling-and-rendering-an-interior-scene-in-3ds-max/ Or download this scene file. If I am not mistaken, a few weeks ago I tried it on my brother's work station and it renders in just 15 minutes.
sanmb
In irradiance map, change current preset to low and see it should take less time.
Dave Buckley
In irradiance map, change current preset to low and see it should take less time. take a look again at the settings, the 'high' setting in the irradiance map is irrelevant because he doesn't have GI enabled so it isn't calculating an irradiance map

Also, during render my fan speeds up, is it normal? And sometimes, when I cancel V-ray render, I need to use Task Manager to end process. Not sure if it hangs are render in background. beestee
How are you lighting this scene? For cancelling renders, try using the escape key while the render progress dialog is active.

Hm...any suggestion to what should I change? How are you lighting this scene? For cancelling renders, try using the escape key while the render progress dialog is active. On my test scene, a very simple scene of 320X240, takes me 12 minutes to render. I only use 1 V-ray sun. The .max file is attached. EDIT: The escape tips works. never thought of that. Thanks. beestee
-Changed the subdivs in the glossy reflection of the gold to 16. 35 is probably a little overkill here. -Using a standard camera, you need to turn the intensity of the sun down. A setting of "0.1" yeilded the result below. Or you could use a VRayPhysicalCamera with exposure turned on. -I changed the indirect illumination from 'photon map' to 'irradiance map' for primary, and 'light cache' for secondary, both with default settings to get the result below. 54s

In his OP it says he's using Windows 7 32bit. So it's pointless having the memory limit set to 400mb as Windows 32bit will only allow 1gb to be used by any one program... servarus
Wow, certainly speed up things. Not to mention looks better. And there's progress too. Encountered some difficulty finding the material editor window, which stuck on another monitor. After resetting and what not I got this result. Around 8 minutes of rendering. I'll try to test what actually made the render time longer. At least now I can practice more stuff on 3D Max.
