Devin Johnston
I know this isn't a usual topic here but I thought I would give it a shot. I've got Premiere 6.5 and I like to use the Windows Media 8 exporter to export my animations, and it works fine on my dual Xeon machine. When I try to export the same clip on my dual Opteron machine I get a "mission codec" error. I've tried reinstalling the software but get the same error every time. Does anyone know if Premiere has a problem with Opteron systems?
Ernest Burden III
I don't know if it does, never heard of it though. I used Premiere 6 and now Pro on an Athlon system and its fine. Perhaps you don't have the right version of Windows Media Player on that machine? I recall that you need the player of Quicktime to get QT output from Premiere, maybe the same applies to WMP. Or, re-install Premiere on the mis-behaving machine.
Devin Johnston
How do you like Premiere Pro, is it worth the upgrade?
Ernest Burden III
How do you like Premiere Pro, is it worth the upgrade? That's hard to say. No, I do not like it. But it has more output options, especially to DVD/MPEG which I think is important. Also, fades and effects show when playing-back inside the program. So I bought it. But the timeline has been re-done, and not improved by my tastes. It IS more industry-standard, I think, just less easy to use. I keep going back to 6.5 for many projects that do not need any special output options because its just a lot easier to get my work done. One recent animation that I was doing with Pro went well enough, but the last phase was audio. I laid down a series of background 'ambient' tracks. As I did so the program had this nasty habit of crashing. Like every few minutes. But they were soft crashes, so I was able to keep making progress, saving, then after one or two playbacks, it would stop working 100% and politely tell me it was having a problem. I got through the process and checked the Adobe website for support on the problem, and they had a few suggestions that didn't help much, except for one that said a solution would be to upgrade to Premiere Pro 1.5 !!! Also, Pro imports P6.5 project files...although never any of mine. I don't know what it is about them, it just won't read them. So I'll keep on using both for now. Devin Johnston
That's horrible, what's the point of getting the upgrade if it makes you life harder and doesn’t even work! I also have to say that Adobe's tech support is horrible, and the fact that after a year they won’t even talk to you unless you pay makes me think that next time I might go with Discreet's fire. David Knourek
A couple years ago I was looking for an NLE solution and because of price constraints I had narrowed my search down to Premier or Vegas Video as they were around the same price. After trying both packages I ended up with Vegas as it was much more stable and you didnt have to wait for a pre-render to preview your work. Been using it since version 3 and now using 5 and still love it. Just a thought, -dave
RyanSpaulding
Then again, Sonic Foundry (who produces Vegas), located in Madison, is a very very crappy company. I've had 2 friends work there.

David Knourek
Then again, Sonic Foundry (who produces Vegas), located in Madison, is a very very crappy company. I've had 2 friends work there. Sonic Foundry has since been bought out by Sony. Also Ive never had a problem with Sonic Foundry or now Sony in the past but then again I was a client and not an employee. -dave
Ernest Burden III
then again I was a client and not an employee. The difference can be huge. Just ask anyone that has worked for Disney...great product...
Ernest Burden III
OK, let's just say that Premiere DOES work, even Pro 1.0 Perhaps some of the other company's products are better, but I will buy Adobe fairly easily, needing little research. I'm sure there are better solutions to some of their stuff.
