Playdo
Hi all. Do you buy many models off of Turbosquid (or similar sites)? I'm trying to get an idea of what sells best, and the general requirements. It'd be very useful to hear your feedback on any of the following points, or other pointers that you may have. 1. What objects do you typically buy? 2. Do you buy more high or low poly (detailed) objects? 3. Do you usually go for cost or quality? 4. Approximately how many models do you buy for a project? 5. Do you usually require materials/textures to be included? If so, are VRay materials necessary? What is a typical texture size requirement? 6. Do you try to buy from a modeler with a large, positive portfolio? 7. What makes you buy a model rather than modeling it yourself? I look forward to hearing back. Thanks Edited May 21, 2011 by Playdo
notamondayfan
Usually buy stuff from stock sites when I dont have time to model something myself, and even then I'm reluctant to because I dont trust other peoples work, or work-flow. Design Connected is usually my first site to look at, I know their quality is average - good, and will withstand most shots, is reasonably priced, and is vray ready. Turbosquid is usually the first place I look because I find the quality is very good and the price is acceptable plus they have a large selection which is the problem with other sites. I've purchased cars, tree, furniture, electronics and animals from them in the past with no complaints. I'm usually buying high poly detailed models from them but the free stuff will sometimes work as well. Cost is a consideration but most of the time I just can't find what I need anywhere else and it will cost me more to model the same thing myself. For large projects I'll purchase 10-20 models depending on what's called for if I don't already have it. I expect anything I purchase to come with materials already mapped and I will look for Vray models first before anything else. I don't look at the modeler's raiting because if I have a problem I can just go back to TS and they will refund my money or find me something comparable. I buy models because I usually don't have the time to model it myself and it's cheaper.
3Dan
I don't rate the search function on TurboSquid, for example try to find a good sofa that fits a particular room, I do find I have to trawl through an awful lot of trash to find something good. I've recently bought a few models from Bertrand Benoit because I have a level of trust for his work, and they are all set up for Vray. Normally you find yourself buying models because there isn't time to make it yourself, so it has to work well straight away or there is little point.
