Facebook and Twitter for freelancers

I was at a talk the other day which was about using Facebook and Twitter in business. In our line of work I can't see where the benefit of these social media is. I could see the benefit for a company that sells direct to the public.

I just wanted to get peoples thoughts on it. Do you use it? Do you get any work out of it ?

@dande - You're right, there are some businesses that should not need to use social media. However, if you have a client base that wants to know what you are doing to improve their lives and or company, having a FB fan page can work. It's a great gateway to keep customers "in the loop".

As for twitter, @notamondayfan (nice handle, do you like Tuesdays?) is correct. Twitter is more like a stock ticker or information streamer. You access data quickly. If you promote content in Twitter it's good to promote jobs, news, specials, and anything that people can digest information quickly and click on if they like the tweet.

As you develop your skills within social media, you start up conversations that lead to relationships. Relationships lead to partnerships and/or indirect sales. Just make sure you put time into your day to keep up the conversations.

I started using twitter not that long ago and I can honestly say that it has absolutely rocked my world - I am kicking myself that i didnt look at it sooner. It has opened up the doors to so many things that otherwise I would have only found had I either spent alot of time specifically looking, or just happened to come across by accident. I enjoy constant updates on vfx, archviz recruitment, media companies, other freelancers as well as links to videos, tutorials, scripts and other useful stuff that people are posting.... and thats just the tip of the iceberg.

Honestly? I cannot recommend it enough.
