Render Farm hardware recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi

I want to setup a small render farm of 5 computers.

I looked at some renderfarm companies but they seem quite expensive.

After doing a little research I believe it's not good to mix 32bit and 64bit O/S not sure about i7 and Xeon but was told to keep O/S and CPU "in the same family" so I'm taking it literally.

I searched for hardware but could only find one item...

If you know anywhere I can get good prices on renderfarm hardware please let me know

For: Backburner, Vray and Vue, Windows7

Thanks

Your link is to BoxxTech. They are the Cadillac of rendering hardware, very expensive, great customer support, turnkey solution, space efficient.

What is your budget? Most small companies / freelancers use networked desktops, tailor made for rendering. They are just powerful desktop machines (good CPU and RAM) without the graphics or storage capabilities. Network the machines, install backburner and your good to go.

It'd difficult to recommend specifics without a budget. But the best bang for the buck looks like i7 2600k for cpu rendering. For more cash but less machines (which has its own efficiencies) then go for a dual quad/six core setup, such as dual xeons.

Thanks Tommy L

I was thinking of 2 of those BoxxTech comps with O/S will be approx $14,000. I don't want to spend more than that. The main computer I'm using with Max etc has Xeon CPUs. Do you think I'll have no problems using i7 desktops for the renderfarm? as I was told to keep O/S and CPU "in the same family". I'll set up a test farm with some pc's I currently own in the meantime.

I was also scared to pay out $14,000 and in 3 years the machines might be redundant. Had me seriously re-thinking about paying for renderfarm services instead as I saw one that gave a free trial.

Big thanks for the advice
