Installed GTX 580, having issues, need advice

Recommended Posts

OK...so I was having poor performance from my previous Nvidia Quardo FX 4600 within Max 2012. Slow viewport performance as well as none of the new features within the Max viewport working, ie. the new Stylized viewport features (Graphite, Colored Pencil etc).

So I went out and bought an EVGA GTX 580. I ran a Cinebench GPU test and it ran 51fps compared to my 4600's @ 23fps. So that was very positive. BUT, I do not see any real improvement inside of Max in terms of performance. Stylized features still do not work, movement within the viewport is not really better as far as I can tell.

So what's up? From the technical side, the install could be an issue, but I don't know. Details - The GTX needs a 6 pin and 8 pin power cable from power supply to be plugged into it. My Power Supply is a 750W Powerstone that is a number of years old. It does not have an 8 pin wire for the video card, just the motherboard. But the gtx 580 came with an 8 pin adapter that "Y's" into 1 six pin and 2 "old" style white 4 pin plugs. So I plugged an existing power supply 6 pin into the 6 pin receptacle of the video card. Then I put the included 8 pin adapter into the video card, plugged a 6 pin from my power supply into one of the "Y's" and took two 4 pins from my power and plugged them into the two 4 pins from the other "Y".

I hope this makes sense. The tech at Micro Center said it would work and it certainly functions.

So what could the bottle neck be? Is it Max itself that is the problem? For instance, one annoying issue is that if I have the frame buffer window open and I simply want to move it from one monitor to the other (dual extended monitor setup), I drag the frame buffer over, but nothing happens, it just sits there. Then maybe 3 seconds later, it decides to actually move. Annoying!

I have spent a decent buck upgrading this machine to the i7 2600K cpu and, now, the evga gtx 580. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a driver issue to me. Since the PSU is functioning running Cinebench, I would take that out of the equation, although be careful on older PSUs degrading over time. It may be a good investment to upgrade to a new PSU like a Corsair HX series for peace of mind with such new, pricy hardware.

So back to drivers, did you do a full uninstall with driver sweeper? Did you install the latest drivers for the card and latest drivers for Max relevant plugins?

275.33 seem to be the newest for the GTX580

Also, did you download the hotfix file from autodesk for 3dmax 2012?

I used Driver Sweeper to uninstall the Nvidia Display driver, but not the Nvidia Chipset or PhysX drivers. I didn't know what those were so it scared me to remove them. Should I have uninstalled them as well? Can I do that now and then just do a reinstall?

I don't see any available drivers for Max relevant plugins.

I installed the drivers from the disk that came with the 580 and then I also downloaded the latest driver available from Nvidia site and installed that.

Thanks for the link, but I get an error message when I try to install the hotfix..."The update patch cannot be installed by the windows Installer service because the program to be pgraded may be missing or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch".

I thought this might have something to do with my having 3ds Max Design 2012 rather than just Max 2012.

hmmm says it is for both: Hot Fix 1 from Autodesk for Autodesk® 3ds Max® 2012 and Autodesk® 3ds Max® Design 2012 software includes fixes for issues with stability and performance based on customer feedback.

Also, you hit up the Area forums yet? http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/autodesk-3ds-max--3ds-max-design-2012/

I don't use max but I do know my hardware. I would say as long as you got the latest drivers installed, it is going to be an issue with the software from Autodesk communicating to the GTX580 but I know lots of people are using Geforce cards over Quadros as of late.

Corsair HX series is what I would recommend.

I personally have the 750HX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139010

I am only running a GTX275 but I have my computer OCd. Intel i7-950 to 4ghz, run 12 gigs ram, Corsair H50 cpu cooler, Antec 1200 case with 7 fans including some 38mm thick 4000 rpm fans( sound like jet engines) and OC the gfx card too and my PSU is going strong.

I would think your set up would be fine with the same model, as the GTX580 recommends minimum 600 watt PSU and the i2600k runs cooler than my CPU and I doubt you have fans cooling your computer like I do.
