Here is my Onyx to Modo work flow. Onyx is very flexible when it comes to poly count. You can customize your tree to suit your needs; from high poly for close-ups to low poly for long shots.

 

I only export the trunk, bough, and branches from Onyx. Also, the Onyx LWO exporter has an option to "minimize" the poly count:

Then, I use Photoshop to create textures from reference photos of the tree:

Finally, I use a fur material for the leaves in Modo. The projection type in the texture locator needs to be set to implicit UV for the leaf maps:

When you import the LWO file into Modo, the file is translated with polygons assigned to their corresponding tree parts. In the shader tree, you should be able to see materials per every tree part. Use these materials to make selections using the material selection tool. Then reassign the polygons to the material that you want to use for that specific tree part. So if you want to have a branch without leaves then assign that branch to the "trunk" or "bark" material in your shader tree. I hope it helps.
