The tutorial book that comes with max (or Help->Tutorials from the menu) is an excellent source. The max reference (Help->User Reference) will give you full details on all of the options.

Yes to be sure,

MR in Max is still one of the steepest learning curves around, although the web based information is starting to show up. But if you are new to Photon based GI and the Final Gather approaches the books, I have seen are about as good as the Max help files- come up short for approach and very slim on how the parameters really effect the render.

gdamaso88,

If you can deal with a broad based programming explaination- i.e this is tied to that and these values are based in this and effect that, from a programmers thinking: Rendering With Mental Ray- Driemeyer-2nd ed.-Springer. Look it up on the web.

Got alot out of the book, however technical. The toughest part is getting into node based thinking with Max's GUI.

Good Luck with MR, keep playing with it.

Hmnn...interesting...What's node based thinking?

How does one think in nodes?:)

It's more of a schematic / logic / programming thinking. You need to make connections in a specific sequence and formatted order for the parts of a shader and shaders to work with in a material. Vs Max's GUI that covers up and relieves the user from having to know how to make the proper connections......, in most areas.

It's just below the surface in most of Max, unless your a programmer or have experience from other apps then you know it's there. Key Framing (a node) and controllers are another example of having to think nodal.

It's a simple concept but I fall short of a simple written explaination.
