Kill Multi-Subobject Materials

I'm converting a model from VR to MR. The folks who previously worked on the model applied textures by creating a 200+ slot multi-subobject material and then applied a Material ID modifier to each piece of geometry.

 

This might have worked well for them but MR doesn't like it one bit. I'm trying to find a script which will break the multi-sub into individual materials. Bonus points if it can then figure out what ID the material was and assign it to the geometry directly (it doesn't need to detach objects or faces).

 

Any help would be sooooooo greatly appreciated.
