Matt Sugden
Hi Guys, I was just wondering, with the cost of memory so cheap these days, if anyone had studied the effect of having more memory in their computer against the time it saves them? It occured to me today (doing an incredibly large render) that if the correlation was as dramatic as twice as much memory twice the speed of the render, then it almost is imperative that I spend a mere £100 or so, and almost double my work efficiency. what are your thoughts or comments? STRAT
if you regulaly render within memory, say within 512 mb's worth, then there's absolutely NO speed gain to be had in upgrading to 2 gig for instance. it'd be redundant and un-used. RAM does not speed up rendering.
sicro
As soon as your computer starts swapping memory from ram to hd, it will slow down considerably. So the optimal amount of ram is not "more" but "enough". Check memory usage during a typical rendering, if all runs in ram you're fine. If not, add the amount of ram that is being swapped to disk. Harjeet Singh
I guess the MAX render dialog indicated the memory being used for a the rendering. As sicro said, the memory indicated in MAX must not be more than your RAM for optimum performance. Also the map shadow sometimes require more than 512M. I personally experienced major efficiency changes with 1gb over 512 for "more than normal" renders. thanks harjeet singh
abicalho
The MAX render dialog indicates the system memory, not MAX' memory. This has been changed in MAX 7 to show how much memory/swap MAX is using. Alexander
STRAT
i agree with rest, how ever increasing the ram, not only speed up the rendering but imprves your workflow. allowing you to run more appz at once yes, it certainloy improves the work flow, but it doesnt speed up the rendering. not unless you were too low on RAM in the first place. Zdravko Barisic
The truth in, in brief, is: -512 MB-You just can start MAX -1 GB -You even can work in MAX -2 GB -Your work is fluid -x GB - You are pretty rich guy!!! Thats my opinion about big larghe senes, with a lot of details, and rendering big Images
