Max performance question...is this a software or hardware weakness?

Recommended Posts

In my example, I created a 300' x 50' plane with 1000 length and 150 width segments. I then used Topology within graphite modeling to create a running bond pattern. Then I selected all faces, beveled using "by polygon" to create the extruded bricks. This created a object with 526K polygons. I have my reasons for creating geometry rather than displacement or mapping.

It was while using "bevel settings" and adjusting the height and bevel amount settings that everything came to a grinding halt. The operation took a couple of minutes to perform.

Is this operation more taxing to the memory, cpu, gpu or the software itself? Can anything be upgraded to speed this type of operation up?

I am using Max 2012 and have 12GB RAM, i7 2600K processor @ 4.2Ghz, and a GTX 580 card. While looking at the windows performance monitor, the CPU usage range was about 15% and the memory usage was around 4.5GB.

CPU. and it won't be a multi-threaded function of max, hence why it's only using 1/8th of your available CPU power (12.5%).

It was right with 3dsmax 2011 or previous version , 3dsMax 2012 is a little improve 1 core fulload and other cores also load (but not full) .

12.5% is wrong too , the Intel's Hyper-Threading Technology just make the multi threaded program ~ 20-25% faster .
