SgWRX
hello. i may have input on a new room which we are moving our design department to. I was thinking we might be able to get a grey color on the walls, get wide spectrum 5000k fluorescent bulbs. does anyone have a recommendation in terms of what color specifically for walls. i think carpet could be a neutral dark grey as well. from my gretag mcbeth calibration it looks like ambient room should be around 5000k in color and 32-80 lux for ambient light amount. thanks,
notamondayfan
Why is it so important to work in a grey box? Are you worried about bleeding from the room? Are you working soley on computers or traditional mediums as well? I guess you'll be wearing grey suits, and blocking off the windows too?
SgWRX
grey suits depends on whether it affects the color on your monitor when you're working in front of it looks like the three things i need to do for at least a basic level is: 32-80 lux ambient lighting, d50 lamps, some type of neutral color on room surfaces. keep direct light off the monitor and not having bright surface or light behind the monitor are some other basic things to do. notamondayfan
I agree that you should avoid bright and contrasty stuff behind you, and keep sun light off the screen, but making everything grey is a bit extreme to me, and would drive me mad, not to mention that I would personally hate working in a grey box with nothing to look at or inspire me. We use screen hoods to keep light off the screens and to also frame the screen in a nice black frame which works really well. I personally find the main thing that throws my colour balancing is actually the software, windows, toolbars, etc. After Effects has a nice grey UI, but there are still yellow frames, icons, toolbars etc that can be distracting, much more than the brick wall to the left of me. Devin Johnston
. keep direct light off the monitor and not having bright surface or light behind the monitor are some other basic things to do. You just decribed my office right down to the off white paint, boy do I wish I could move into the server room.
