TSuess
I want to extrude (A) this profile along (B) this path and then conform the result to © this plane. The result should be a curb following grade. Any thoughts? Is there a good plug-in for this? Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom Edit: It's the conform part that I'm having trouble with.
Stephen Thomas
You will need to conform the spline first before you do the sweep, otherwise your extrusion will get flattened. Maybe one of the glue plugins would be more suitable than conform for this.
TSuess
I know that 3dsMax will not allow you to conform a spline. I'll try Glue.
davistalexander
but glue will.. or slice the surface, extract a spline and use sweep to generate your loft .... bob's your uncle.. d Edited July 12, 2011 by davistalexander
TSuess
I just googled "Bob's your uncle" I had no clue what you were talking about. I learned something new.
Dave Buckley
shapemerge rather than conform? Then simply extract the path from the grade to use as a sweep.
davistalexander
I learned something new. We are all here to learn something. Davis
TSuess
Dave Buckley, I used shapemerge then extracted the spline. The spline just flattened back out. Lost all info on the Z axis.
Stephen Thomas
Try converting to editable poly first before extracting the spline.
Dave Buckley
Yeh I didn't explain very well, it definately works, I use it daily this explains it much better http://jasonaddy.blogspot.com/2010/06/using-shapemerge-for-site-modeling.html
Dave Buckley
don't know how you can model sites without it
TSuess
I'm still missing something! I create my shapemerge and the extract function re-flattens the spline. So I convert to an Editable Poly and the option to extract disappears. Obvioiusly the sweep modifier is not working because it only functions with shapes or splines. What is the critical step that I am missing?
TSuess
OK I got it. Use the "border" sub-object of your Editable Poly. Right click on it and choose "Create Shape" Ah-ha. Dave Buckley
yup, after shapemerge, convert the ground back into editable poly, go to edge sub-object mode, select the edges that have just been merged onto the ground, then create shape from selection that will give you a line that is detached from the ground but sits exactly on top of it where it should do
