Unusual carpet - how to approach it?

Hey guys,

 

I need some direction in how to make this carpet:

(please ignore the language, it's the three pictures in the middle)

 

As you can see it looks like fallen leaves. It's also made of some sort of leather, or so it says. Thing is despite it being a 160x230 carpet my client want to use it on the entire livingroom floor - easily 30 square meteres. It's a hell of geometry even with vray proxy.

 

Any ideas not involving MultiScatter for 200euro, and reasonable performance?

you could try modeling five or six "leaves" and then distributing them across a plane using pflow. lots of people use this technique to make grass so if you search "grass pflow" you'd probably find a tutorial

there is a free plug-in called Grass-o-Matic which would be perfect for this,

Thanks, i really forgot about pflow and Grass-o-Matic looks perfect indeed. However my client changed his mind and I no longer need this carpet. There really was time to get used to it...

good thing cause I have seen this carpet in person, it is a germ trap, dust trap, a rat could hide in there. I could never place my kids and this germ collecting carpet in the same room.
