If you are a student at an Autodesk associated school, you can actually get an educational version for free for 3 years now.

 

Not sure if that helps.

 

30 days is probably not enough to become proficient, but if you immerse yourself in it, you could learn quite a bit.

 

maybe take a course somewhere and take advantage of the 3 year license ?

You might want to take a look at some of the free Autocad alternative programs such as Draftsight or DoubleCAD XT. Or you could pick up a copy of ProgeCAD for about $400. All of these programs are very similar to Autocad and they read and write to the .dwg drawing format. This might be a good way for you to learn CAD drafting without spending a lot of money.

Try the 30 day demo and also go out and get a book. Many of the skills and commands I learned back in 1989 (at age 16) still exist today in the program, point being, the basics commands just don't go out of date and even if you don't use the program for another 2 years a book will still be a solid reference for you.
