Compact and Slate Material Editor problems

Hi,

 

I'd be grateful if someone can help me with this..... I'm using 3dsMax 2012 -my main problem is with the material/map browser when using the compact material editor- the maps option is greyed out when you right click on the little down arrow to the left of the search box- dont know why, but it means I cant access any of the environment maps etc. Managed to recreate environment stuff in the slate editor to get round it, the maps option isn't greyed in the slate editor.... probably something stupid but its driving me mad! any ideas?
