mesh flip when selected

This is a problem I experience often when I have made a copy or instance of a mesh. THough I have never really figured out how to fix it. So now I decided to take the time and ask the question:

 

How to stop a mesh flipping around when selected. It only fips in an opposite direction when one goes to the sub object level to select vertices for instance.

 

Its nothing like normal flip.

 

Any ideas?
