Few Arch modeling questions

I just had a few work flow questions just to get an idea on how others model and compare to how I been doing it. I want to get better so figure best way is to ask questions!

 

1. When modeling a multi story building do you model each floor then stack them? Do you go about this in a different way? Do you attach them afterward? How would you do this?

 

2. When extruding from a CAD file do you extrude the actual splines from the drawing? Or do you draw out your own splines? Do you use the walls feature in Max? Or another way?

 

3. If you do use the walls feature in Max do you then use the Windows and Doors feature to punch the holes into the walls or do you cut them out by hand?

 

4. Really isnt a question but if you have links to some great tutorials I'd love to see them. I go to a few sites to get tutorials. What I been looking for on Youtube the past few days is a timelaps video of some one modeling a arch model.

I would generally model the floor plates and internal walls individually, and leave them stacked onto each other, with stairs, elevators, etc intersecting the plates. I would then generally model exterior walls as one object.

If the CAD drawings are usable, then I would use those, but generally the CAD isn't usable so I would quickly trace over it.

Do you use the walls feature in Max? Or another way?

I never use the walls features, I like total control over my models, and either poly model the walls, or extrude shapes. It all depends on what you're creating.

Hey wow thanks! I do every thing you do it sounds so that makes me happy! One thing though. When I make a building where the walls are straight up this works great. I have a 4 story CAD plan I found online and I'm bout to start modeling it for a portfolio piece. The first two floors are shaped differently then the top to. Its a office/flat. The top to protrude from the bottom. I was going to make all 4 floors in this case but what you said makes sense and I should just make two separate ones and combine afterwards. Make sense?Sound good to you? hah

 

Also when I get home I'll look over those links. Funny thing.......they all work but the cgarchitect one lol

Thats really strange, I posted the link http://www.ronenbekerman.com/category/tutorials/ not a CGArchitect link, very wierd, a conspiracy maybe :p

 

Anyway, basically just model how ever works best for you, and you will soon evolve and adapt. I opened up a model I made about a year ago, and it surprised me how much I have changed since then.

 

Just keep an eye out for new / interesting tutorials, and just experiment.

OK this is f**king stupid now, I want to post a link to the ronenbekerman site and it keeps changing the link to CG architect!

 

I thought this site was about sharing and openness, why sensor links?! I understand Ronen's blog is arch viz based like this site, but is it really necessary to try to stop people from visiting there?!

 

I hope this is an oversight, as it seems very underhand and not in the slightest helpful!

Hey thanks guys. I just like to hear how other make things. I am one of those people who like to go look what I did and then have some one just rip it apart and say try it this way....not in a mean way but you know haha

 

Anyone else care to share?

 

I also visit that site fairly often but must have over looked that post on the blog!
