Can anyone help?

I have tried to assign materials to an object but each time I load a

particular material in the Materials Editor the 'assign to selection' button is disabled.

Can anyone kindly explain what I have to do to sort this out. I have done everything

but there must be something really simple that I have missed and it is driving me mad!

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure I understand your problem.

Are you having this issue with just the one material in particular or is it any material you try to assign to one particular object?

If it's a material , what kind? If it's the object what is it imported, xref etc.

If I just colour the 'ball' it is fine and it works however if I choose a material from the library it does not work.

I have not used an xref it is purely from the library. As soon as I choose a material I then click on it and when

the 'ball' has it the 'assign to selection' button is then disabled.

Many thanks for your proposed help.

Now I understand - I have no materials in the library so therefore I have to make the

materials.

I am teaching myself 3ds Max and it did not expand on this fact in the book or dvd.

I will have to make the materials.

Big thanks you really have helped me.

This is really a learning curve. I have now located the disc which has the material files

and I have tried to import without much success. Do you have any ideas how to facilitate

this?

After this I think I would have cracked it!

Thanks again in advance for your invaluable advice

If you are talking about Material Libraries they have a .mat file extension.

In the material editor click on the Get Material button.

When the material/map browser opens up click on the black down arrow at the top and from the menu choose Open material library.

Then you can choose the .mat file to load. when it is done the materials from the library will appear and you can then load them into the material editor.

If in the other hand whan you say "material files" you mean textures (.bmp.jpg, .tif etc.) then you need to create the material to use it.

Select an empty slot in the material editor and beside Diffuse click the little button. Select the texture file that you want and click ok. Then you can apply that material to the object.

The help file in 3DS Max is really good and you will find a lot of information in it many times with examples.
