A.Mitov
Sometimes I stumble upon strange behavior in 3ds Max. Recently these problems appeared again on one of our computers and what's strange is that on another of our PCs we don't experience these problems. All PCs are identical - identical OS, Max versions, plug-ins and scripts installed. It's a large scale project - a football academy with big open spaces but not so big poly count - somewhere about 700 K polys. Sometimes when I Hit "M" to open Material editor Max just freezes and I have to terminate it in Task manager. Other times it just crashes to desktop when clicking "Save as..." without even showing the crash report screen. Now it even began crashing when hitting F9 without showing error report screen. So far we suspect the ColorCorrect plug-in by Cuneyt Ozdas ( http://www.cuneytozdas.com/software/3dsmax/ ) or V-Ray because when applying a "Standart" material to the whole scene we don't experience this unusual behavior (so far). Any help and ideas how to tackle this is greatly appreciated! Edited August 6, 2011 by A.Mitov
datacrasher
if you have 700k polys add optimize modifier to cut your polys down to half are you using the same amount of Ram on the same computers Alexander? what service pack are you using? try updating your max. it maybe the file your using. Restart max and start merging your objects into new scene make sure your using the same unit and system units. make sure you save as a new file name and not over-write the old file name once you have done this. You should delete the old file your usings If this does not work then it maybe the max.ini that has corrupted Tony Edited August 6, 2011 by datacrasher

Max version is 2009 with the latest service pack and hotfixes. I've already tried merging all into a new scene but it didn't help. I may try your advice about the max.ini file. I hope this helps. theqball
are there any differences between the hardware configs of the two machines? are the graphics cards the same and the same drivers? are the screen resolutions the same and same number of monitors on both systems? marc666
Hi, A. Mitov, This software (3ds max) is very big and complicated software, at a same it is very delicate. Because programer use writes lots of scripting, languages and third party stuffs. And this peoples takes real challenges and set a mile-stone in the market. That's why a 3ds max No.1 in 3d world(+ point). And nobody is perfect. This software uses lots of memory and processor power to produce a single image. We designers only see front-end, in the back-end (data processing) it take data dump, compiling codes, memory management, solving problem, register the tools and after all that we get great results. Sorry, I'm here for give a you solution. Not for discuss the how 3ds max works. Before giving a solution you might know the how 3ds max works. Here is the solution. That might work I guess. 3ds max tools uses lots of windows registry, even a single value give you head-ache. Don't use default windows uninstall wizard, because windows never deletes complete registry values. That why you getting same or worst problems. Use third party uninstallers to uninstall the 3ds max which cleans also the windows registry. (Like: your uninstaller, ashampoo uninstaller or other uninstaller which suits you best.) I think this is best way to get rid of you problem.

joeyt
make sure you are not using any Renderer with your Video hardware.Because it makes Material editor confused.of curse it is a progame bug I guess. V ray ok,fianlrender ok,any renderder with CPU only will help.
